NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — There’s a new partnership up in Niagara Falls to keep students safe.
The City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Falls School District and Niagara Falls Coach Lines partnered with school bus safety company Bus Patrol. Cameras are installed on buses to catch drivers passing illegally.
That information will be sent along to law enforcement, who will then issue tickets to those drives. It’s something Niagara Falls Mayor Rob Restaino says is meant to keep kids safe, not just issue fines.
“This is not about collecting money,” he said. “This has nothing to do with trying to supplement budget issues. This is purely a safety issue. The cargo on those buses, to say it is important, is almost lessening how important it is. But there are those, whether it’s inattention or object error, whatever it is, you can see that there are people who still don’t get it.”
This is a no-cost program funded through a violator low cost-recovery business model. Bus Patrol receives 60% of the funds as a part of the agreement.
