CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Buffalo Police have arrested a 16-year-old Rochester male and a 15-year-old Buffalo male in connection with a car chase Thursday that left a BPD officer in critical condition.

The 16-year-old is charged with assault on a police officer and unlawful fleeing from a police officer in a motor vehicle, while the 15-year-old is charged with second-degree burglary, criminal mischief and petit larceny unrelated to Thursday's incident, according to authorities.

The two are being held at the East Ferry Detention Center.

While police say an investigation into the incident is ongoing, they believe it started with a call about four suspects with a gun in a vehicle at Crossman Avenue near Genesee Street at 1 p.m.

Buffalo police arrived on scene, attempted to stop the vehicle and that’s when they say a chase ensued. It ended minutes later, when the suspects' car crashed into a light pole and a couple of parked cars on Harlem Road in Cheektowaga.

The light pole fell onto the BPD cruiser that was pursing the car, striking the sole officer inside. That officer, identified by police as 29-year-old Jonathan Negron, was taken to ECMC and is in the TICU in critical condition with severe head trauma.

"Any time a pursuit originates or chase, whether on foot or by vehicle, in one jurisdiction and comes to end in another, as long as they don't cross state lines, that pursuing agency is the one that takes the arrest and conducts the investigation,” said BPD Captain Jeff Rinaldo. “Cheektowaga, State Police and federal agencies are assisting us in a search right now. There is a considerable amount of territory that was covered as part of the chase, as well as the cemetery, so other agencies are assisting us while looking for evidence.”

Buffalo Police Benevolent Association President John Evans released two statements Thursday, saying:

"We are grateful he is alive. He’s a dedicated officer, two years on the force. Praying for his full recovery. Responding officers did a heroic job. Many thanks to the doctors and staff at ECMC, as well as the support from the public."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Jonathan Negron tonight after he was seriously injured while on duty earlier today. Thank you to those officers who came to Officer Negron’s aid for your heroic actions."
