BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mayor Byron Brown says he is concerned about public safety as more people support the push to eliminate the school zone speed camera program.
He spoke in support of the controversial program on WBEN radio, one day after the Common Council voted to end it.
Brown calls the council’s decision "curious," considering the council unanimously approved the program in the first place.
Since then, many people have come out against the speed zone cameras, saying they unfairly target people who live in the city’s poorest areas.
"So, we will be looking at a range of other options for traffic calming and traffic safety, but I think the school zone speed program has been working. It is proven to be successful, people are slowing down and children and people in our community are safer as a result," Mayor Brown said.
The mayor can still veto the Common Council’s decision. However, councilmembers believe they have enough support to override a mayoral veto.
