Another candidate is running for Erie County Sheriff.
Retired Buffalo Police Officer John Garcia announced his candidacy for the Republican Primary on Wednesday.
The Buffalo State graduate has 25 years of law enforcement experience, which includes time as a homicide detective and as commander of the Crisis Management Team.
The Erie County Republican Committee has already endorsed former Buffalo Police Officer Karen Healey-Case.
Also looking to take over from Sheriff Tim Howard are Assistant Cheektowaga Police Chief Brian Gould, and former Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant, who will both vie for the Democratic endorsement.
Other candidates include Amherst Police Lieutenant Ted Dinoto, the founder of a second amendment rights group, Steve Felano, and community activist Myles Carter.
