BUFFALO, N.Y. — One of the oldest parks in the history of the city of Buffalo will no longer go by the name Columbus Park.

From now on, the park located along Porter Avenue and Niagara Street will go by Prospect Park — which it was originally named.

The statue of Christopher Columbus was removed from the park back in July after standing there for 51 years.

Council Majority Leader David Rivera says he was in constant discussion with the Italian-American community in Western New York on how to best preserve the history of the area, while being respectful and considerate of everyone in the city.

"I want to thank the Italian-American community for that. And I am honored to say that right there at Prospect Park we'll have a monument dedicated to the Italian-American community,” Rivera (D) said.

Now that this has passed, the council is sending this legislation off to the Department of Public Works to update the signage in and around the park.
