More than nine months after being shot in the streets of Buffalo, a young man living with a cognitive disability took the ice at KeyBank center.

Jason Phillips' solo performance at SABAH's 2020 celebration Sunday capped off a long road to recovery.

Phillips was shot in the city on May 31. Though he spent weeks in the hospital, Phillip's family says it was his love for competing with SABAH and the Special Olympics that helped him recover.

"He's really a sport person; he loves sports,” said Mary Phillips, Jason’s grandmother. “Anything pertaining to sports, he's right there on that."

"Jason has been skating with SABAH for at least 15 years, and just sweet, kind, always looking out for his buddies," added Sheila O’Brien, SABAH’s executive director.

Officials said Phillips' performance Sunday was the highlight of a show involving 700 special athletes and 400 volunteers.
