Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour will be retiring at the end of the year.

Voutour was first elected in 2008 as the 56th sheriff in the county.

He was re-elected to two more terms in 2012 and 2016 and was un-opposed both times.

Sheriff Voutour said he believes in term limits and feels like it is his time to move on and start a new chapter, allowing a fresh face to take the reins.

Voutour joined the department in September 1993 as a deputy and was promoted to sergeant, captain and chief deputy before joining the Sheriff’s Office, where he served for more than 26 years.

Sheriff Voutour will retire on December 30.
