A victim of priest sexual abuse, himself a former priest, is once again calling on Bishop Richard Malone to resign.
Robert Hoatson, president of Road to Recovery, returned to Buffalo Friday, and spoke in front of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo’s headquarters demanding Malone’s resignation or for the Vatican to have Malone removed.
This is by no means the first time he’s called on Bishop Malone to resign, but it comes at a time when a long list of others are following suit as well.
This time, Hoatson said the resignation request centers around Bishop Malone’s mishandling of the alleged relationship between an ordained priest, Father Jeff Nowak, a local seminarian and Bishop Malone’s former priest secretary Father Ryzard Biernat.
Hoatson said Malone took too long to address the issue of priest misconduct dating back to last November.
Father Nowak was placed on administrative leave just last week.
Hoatson also took issue with the audio recordings featuring Bishop Malone and his key advisors released earlier this week.
His statements come a day after the Movement to Restore Trust, once a strong ally of Malone, also called for the Bishop to resign and said the laity group can no longer move forward.
“It's a huge move because Bishop Malone was using the laity, by the way, which is often done by bishops when they are caught in a mess, they will call in lay people after the fact, while Rome is burning, and then expect them to clean it up or at least have the image of having it cleaned up," Hoatson said.
From here Hoatson is off to Saint Bonaventure in Cattaraugus County alleging Franciscan Friars there have refused to help a woman who is a victim of childhood sexual abuse.
A request for comment placed with the diocese last night, in response to the Movement to Restore Trust’s statement, and another this morning regarding Hoatson’s comments, were not immediately returned.
