The final count down to the 12 best days of summer is officially underway.
The Fair Train chugged into Hamburg Wednesday and, as usual, was greeted by adoring crowds.
But how many know the history behind it?
It's much more than thrills and shrills. James E. Strates, a Greek immigrant who called the Southern Tier home, started the carnival on wheels 95 years ago.
Since then, 50 railcars transport the rides, vehicles and concession stands used at the Erie County Fair. The partnership now goes back four generations responsible for nearly two weeks’ worth of smiles each summer.
It’s also America’s last remaining railroad carnival.
Crews unload the train in just 18 hours.
After all, they only have a week until the Erie County Fair begins.
