A Buffalo principal has resigned amid an investigation into how he handled a situation with a Buffalo Common Council member.

BPS officials confirmed Thursday that Jerome Piwko has stepped down.

He was placed on administrative leave while the district investigated an incident where common councilor Ulysees Wingo brought a loaded gun to an event at Riverside High School.

Wingo said it was an accident and when he realized what he did, he alerted the principal.

Wingo removed the ammunition and the gun was locked in a school safe.

Neither Wingo nor Piwko were charged criminally, even though having a gun on school grounds is against state law.

It's also against BPS policy, and Wednesday night, the Board of Education banned Wingo from district property for at least 18 months — meaning he will not be allowed to attend his son's high school graduation Monday.
