The Tonawanda man accused of setting his former girlfriend on fire has been arraigned on attempted murder and assault charges Thursday.
Jonathon White was called to face those two felony charges on a secure floor at the Erie County Medical Center. He is recovering from burns to himself after he lit Jessica Cameron on fire last month.
The incident happened outside a Tim Hortons restaurant on Niagara Street in the City of Tonawanda, where the victim worked.
Prosecutors said after a domestic dispute, White lured Cameron outside the restaurant to a secluded area, then doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire.
The two share three children.
Cameron remains in the Burn Unit at ECMC with extensive damage to her face head and hands. She's had multiple surgeries since it happened. Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says Cameron will face severe problems moving forward.
”She's going to have significant disfigurement,” he said. “I don't want to get into specifics about what her medical condition is but she's going to be in bad shape. She's going to live with this for the rest of her life and that's why I'm going to do whatever I can to get her justice.”
White's injuries are less severe. He's in the custody of the Erie County Sheriff's office at ECMC. An arson charge against him was dropped.
He has another court date set for February 13. White faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if he's convicted on the attempted murder and assault charges.
