As the holiday season approaches, Buffalo Distilling Company is getting ready to release a local favorite with a fresh twist.
They were the first in Western New York to distill krupnik, and now they think they're the first in the world to barrel- age it.
The traditional Polish honey liquor is made around Christmastime and is popular at Buffalo's Dyngus Day celebrations.
Buffalo Distilling owners started with their traditional krupnik recipe and then barreled it for as long as eight months. They hope to be able to make about 400 bottles of the first batch, with an eye to expanding production for next year with a longer ageing process.
"Our original krupnik is delicious and people have really been enjoying it, and we put it in the barrels. Sure enough, we put this stuff in the barrels and pull it out, and it's darker,” said Andy Wegrzyn of Buffalo Distilling Company. “It's richer. It's got more flavors to it that are not present in the unbarreled. And wow! It's really dynamite.”
The barrel-aged krupnik release party will fall on November 24, Small Business Saturday. The fun kicks off at noon with a Polka band from 3-6 p.m.
