BUFFALO, N.Y. —The FBI announced it has made significant progress in taking down two gangs on Buffalo’s east side.

The gangs 'Cash Been Long' (CBL) and 'Brothers For Life' (BFL) began in 2009, according to the FBI, and many members not only lived in the Towne Garden housing complex, but stored their drugs and weapons inside the units.

"The gangs used violence including murder, along with threats and intimidation to defend their territory against rival gangs," said U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy.

The gangs' activity spread to the Walden Galleria Mall and Chippewa Street, according to authorities.

Investigators say 12 members were indicted, while one is still at large.

Police say they are looking for 23-year-old Rashad Rose of Buffalo.

Kennedy said the men were involved and charged for a number of activities including intimidation, gun violence, murder, drug trafficking, robbery, threatening witnesses and retaliation.

Kennedy also said gang members used social media platforms to share messages of violence.

"Some seniors say they were afraid to leave their homes," said Mayor Byron Brown.

The FBI says some of the most violent members of these gangs are in now custody.

It was also announced Thursday that more award money — $25,000 — is now available for information leading to an arrest in the Grape Street homicide.

While one person is under arrest in that case, Erie County District Attorney John Flynn says investigators believe others are involved.
