FREDONIA, N.Y. — Chautauqua County Fire investigators have ruled the blaze that destroyed the historic clock tower atop Family Church in Fredonia Friday was accidental.
They say part of a copper gutter became energized after strong winds blew it off the bell tower and on to a nearby transformer, causing it to smolder and ignite. Cleanup crews spent the day inside removing water-damaged debris.
Church leaders say they'll meet with their national church restoration management team Tuesday to help review the demolition process, including an asbestos test. If asbestos is not found, the process could take a few days, while if it is found, demolition could take up to a month.
"How do we take the steeple down, where it'd be safe for the community and how to have it sealed off? That way no more rain comes in and to figure out what would be the best course of action of starting to rebuild it," said Michael Lokietek, Family Church senior pastor.
