SILVER CREEK, N.Y. — There are a handful of groups for veterans to join once their back in civilian life, like AMVETS.

One post in Silver Creek is starting up a group for kids as well.

What You Need To Know

  • AMVETS is a group that helps veterans when they rejoin civilian life

  • A post in Silver Creek, N.Y. is starting an AMVETS group for kids

  • The group would help kids develop leadership, problem-solving skills and more, through community service and other programs

"I hope that we will get better at what we're doing and well, just be happy here," said Juliana Lindow, who is looking forward to a local Junior AMVETS group.

She was part of a small group of kids huddled over poster boards on a weeknight. But this wasn’t for a school project. These signs were for a food drive.

"We get to help people that don't have a lot of money," said Donnie Lindow, who is also looking to be part of the group.

The Lindow kids hope a Junior AMVETS group gets off the ground in Silver Creek. It would be open to anyone in the general area.

It’s a way for kids to develop leadership, problem-solving skills and more, through community service and other programs.

"I love to hear him laugh and smile and the fact that they want to come down here and be involved in what we're doing," said Jeremy Taggart, a Sons of AMVETS commander whose kids are also part of the group. "It's a sense of pride for me."

All you need to join is have a family member who was or is in the military.

"We're not just there to fight your battles overseas. We're also here to clean up messes and natural disasters that happen. Our people are still there," Taggart said. "So we just want them to know that they're supported on that end."

These kids are proud of their family’s service.

"Because there’s someone fighting for everyone in their life," Donnie explained.

They might not realize the lessons they’re learning in the process.

"For them to serve the community like this, it’s just maybe a glimpse of what happens in the future for them," explained Donald Lindow, a Sons of AMVETS member and the Lindow kids’ dad. "That they can also do that without worry and then continue to serve, whether it be in the military or in the community."

This group wants others to get involved too.

"They are my top recruiters," said Taggart. "They try to get all their friends on board."

It’s inspiration that doesn’t stop with the kids.

"Adults and children alike, if we can all get involved in our community, I believe that as a whole we'll get way further along and developing an understanding of what really community is," said Donald.

For now, they’re doing projects here and there, but to officially get off the ground they need some more members, specifically between ages 12 to 17.

"They can learn what it is to be like a community helper like around the world maybe," said Justina.

It’s something these kids are really looking forward to.

"It is a good time…being here," said Donnie.

If the group gets officially recognized, they plan to continue their service and fundraise for educational trips to museums and military exhibits in the area.
