Catholic Health is resuming elective surgeries at all of its facilities on Friday.

The health care system put a pause in place on anything that wasn't an emergency due to fears of an IV fluid shortage. The move was made earlier this week after Hurricane Helene impacted the Baxter Drug Manufacturing facility in North Carolina, which is responsible for making 60% of IV fluid in the United States. However, health care officials say they have done a good job conserving the IV fluid supply since that time.

Catholic Health is one of many health care providers across the country that has prepared for the possibility of a significant shortage. The situation has prompted the American Hospital Association to run the flag up to the federal level.

It is imploring the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the current administration to help bump up IV fluid production while also keeping the recovery efforts at Baxter in North Carolina going to get the facility that usually produces roughly 1.5 million bags of fluids a day back up and running.

Catholic Health facilities include Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Sisters Hospital and its St. Joseph campus.
