ALDEN, N.Y. — Five inmates at Wende Correctional Facility are facing new charges after a large fight broke out in the mess hall, according to authorities.

That fight happened on January 5.

Guards had to use several rounds of pepper spray and tear gas to gain control of the situation. And officials say some inmates needed to go to the infirmary for treatment.

Corrections officials say inmates involved in the fight are now in a special housing unit where they await disciplinary charges.

The state correctional officers union says guards later recovered a makeshift weapon on the floor of the mess hall.
