BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo's fire department has a new leader: William Renaldo is now the city's fire commissioner.

The 30-year veteran of the department says he came out of retirement to take the position because he wants to help shape the department's future.

Buffalo's fire department has been plagued by overtime issues. Renaldo says his top priority is to address staffing.

"Staffing has a huge impact on overtime and the overall budget," Renaldo said. "The administration has already given me a running start on that with recently graduated 53 firefighters and there are plans to put on another 60 or so on in the August-September time frame. So that's going to go a long ways in alleviating some of the overtime problems we're having now."

The outgoing fire commissioner, Vincent Muscarella, will remain with the department, but will take the title of captain.

He was injured on duty in April.
