With hospitalizations and coronavirus-related deaths continuing to decrease across the state, horse racing fans in New York can expect a new normal.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said horse racing tracks will reopen on June 1. In the region, that includes Batavia Downs, The Buffalo Raceway, and Watkins Glen International Race Track.
However, there is a catch, as fans will not be allowed in the stands.
"If you have economic activity without a crowd, that's great," he said. "We can do that in this state with horse racing tracks and we're going to do that. They'll be guidelines for the participants, but no crowds, no fans. But for the industry itself, for the televised viewers, that can still work."
Baseball fans itching to return to the ballpark still have to wait in Limbo. Cuomo said the decision is up to Major League Baseball, not the state.
On Friday, May 16, Cuomo announced that beaches will start to reopen this coming Friday for Memorial Day Weekend.
