Drivers who haven't switched over to an E-Z Pass already when driving on the New York State Thruway might want to think about making that change.
New York state is transitioning to cashless tolling upstate. According to the Thruway Authority, two gantries are in place in the Capital Region — at Exit 21B in Coxsackie and Exit 22 in Selkirk.
For those without E-Z Pass, the system will take a photo of the vehicle's license plate and the registered owner will receive a bill in the mail.
“Cashless tolling will have a tremendous impact on our economy as drivers that rely on our roadway will be able to get home quicker, easier to other destination, making it much more efficient,” said Thruway Authority Director Matthew Driscoll.
About 70 cashless tolling sensors are scheduled to be installed along the Thruway by the end of the year.
The Grand Island Bridge, near Buffalo, incorporated a cashless toll system in 2018.
