GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. —Slow down but don’t stop and leave the change in the cup holder.
The long-awaited change to cashless tollbooths has arrived on Grand Island.
Special cameras at the end of the bridge will capture E-ZPass tag information. Don’t have E-ZPass? Not to worry: the same cameras will snap a license plate photo and a bill will be sent to the address on file at the DMV.
Failure to make payments will result not being able to re-register your car when the time comes.
Grand Island Town Supervisor said a study done showed high toxin levels by the Grand Island bridges.
"We had some of the dirtiest air in New York State by the Grand Island bridges and one of the reasons for that is that stop and go traffic,” he said.
Officials also believe this will help unite the Buffalo-Niagara region.
"You take down the burden of getting over to Niagara Falls and that's a stigma in peoples' heads in Western New York, you're going to see attendance at Niagara Falls skyrocket because now they can just fly through," said Michael Billoni of Billoni Associates.
