After three homicides in a little more than a month, Endicott's police chief said Tuesday that the community is not in danger.
On Saturday, police said they responded to Fillmore Avenue where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper chest. He was taken to Wilson Hospital, but died of his injuries. Endicott police said they arrested 49-year-old Antoine Loupe, Jr. and charged him with second-degree murder.
Police said that was unrelated to a July 1 homicide, where a 25-year-old man was shot and killed on Adams Avenue. A person was seen fleeing the area, but police have not made an arrest, authorities said in a press release.
And, last month, 35-year-old Jessica Picciano was killed on North Arthur Avenue. Police arrested 41-year-old James English, Jr. and charged him with second-degree murder, according to a press release at the time.
The village of Endicott had two homicides in the past 10 years before last month, said Police Chief Patrick Garey.
Garey said Tuesday that the victims and suspects in each homicide were familiar to each other, making any kind of prevention a challenge.
"It is such a kind of intimate issue that unless we're brought in ahead of time, there's really no way for us to try to prevent something like that. It's not like increased patrols are going to add any safety level or an increased presence. So that is probably what makes it the most frustrating," he said.
