The Steuben County Public Health Department has released new data on local overdoses.

During June 2024, the health department says 37 overdoses were reported, one death was reported, three deaths are under investigation for potential overdose deaths and 22 instances of Narcan administration were cited.

“The percentage of Narcan administration for overdoses has risen in 2024 compared to previous years,” Public Health Director Darlene Smith said in a statement. “Steuben County and its partners are committed to providing free, accessible Narcan training in order to empower residents to prevent overdoses."

Health officials say six of Steuben’s overdose records last month cited opioids as a suspected drug causing the overdose; 23 overdose records did not note a specific substance or were not able to be accessed for a full review; and the remaining eight records indicated another substance was suspected to be the cause of an overdose. Other reported substances included alcohol, prescription drugs and others.

The county is offering Narcan training online. To schedule in-person training, call Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438 or reach out to the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee.

Other available resources include the Steuben County Substance Abuse Services (SCASAS), which offers outpatient services in Bath (607-664-2156), Corning (607-937-6201) and Hornell (607-324-2483) and after-hours services (607-937-7800).
