A 20-year-old man was set to be arraigned Monday after driving while intoxicated and fatally killing a 72-year-old woman at the Oakdale Commons on Sunday, police said.

Rajee Almashni of Binghamton allegedly tried to steal from the Oakdale Commons before he got in his car and sped through the parking lot and fatally struck Elizabeth Atkinson, who was leaving the mall, according to a statement from the Johnson City Police Department.

Officers said they responded to the mall parking lot at 4:21 p.m. and had stopped Almashni’s car. But, police said while they were checking his information, he sped off, hit Atkinson and drove away.

Police said they chased Almashni onto State Route 201 South as he tried to escape police until his car broke down on Baldwin Street. Officers said he then tried to run away, but they were able to catch him and take him into custody.

Atkinson was brought to Wilson Hospital, where she died, according to police.

Almashni is charged with second-degree murder, driving while intoxicated and grand larceny among other charges, according to the Johnson City Police Department statement.
