High winds were the root cause of the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex collapse this past Sunday, according to a statement from the complex's owners.

This is the second time the structure has been compromised, with a roof collapse in December 2020 following a snow storm. The building was in the process of being rebuilt from that first incident when it came down Sunday night.

"First and foremost, we are so thankful that no one was hurt. With the high winds and where the status of the building was in sequence of construction, it led to the damage. The building design has been reviewed by several engineering firms and determined it's absolutely safe. Unfortunately, there was a sequencing error in the construction, and the timing of a gust of wind in the evening caused the damage," read the statement from the Kashou Family in part.

"Onward and upward! While this is a setback, we are most grateful no one was hurt, and we will be moving forward with a delayed opening, about six to eight weeks. Many thanks to all of the first responders who showed up on the scene immediately."

The Kashou Family have managed the complex on Airport Road since 2005 and called the structure a "staple of the community," noting that they are ever grateful for the community support they have received.

The owners anticipate the reopening of the GBSC in 2022.
