Environmentalists in Binghamton are raising concerns about the possibility of gel-fracking in New York State.
They're worried gas-drilling companies could exploit a loophole in state law. Currently, only hydro-fracking with water is prohibited. But opponents say other methods, using gelled propane or diesel oil, are just as hazardous.
"There has never been an environmental or public health review of gel propane fracking in New York,” said Toxics Targeting President Walter Hang. “And so to simply say 'oh we'll let the permit applicant do their own review,' that's just completely unacceptable."
Advocates are asking for an immediate moratorium on gel-fracking until the issue is addressed.
