A major fire on River Street, near Middleburgh Street and Ingalls Avenue, has been tamed. Friday, firefighters were on scene for more than two hours before they made entry into the building.

This building behind is currently under renovation and was being transformed into loft apartments. Those plans are now in jeopardy after the fire broke out shortly after 6:30 p.m.

There was heavy fire on the top floors. Several fire departments were called in to tackle the flames from several angles. Troy Mayor Patrick Madden says he doesn’t believe anyone was inside the building at the time of the fire.

There’s no word on the cause at this time.

Firefighters appeared to have most of the fire knocked down as they continued to work on hotspots.

The building was set to house the Collar City Loft Apartments and the ribbon cutting ceremony was last September. It was previously an abandoned factory]

State and local officials and representatives from "RedBurn Development Partners" were present at the ceremony for the 90,000 square foot building.

Last year, we reported the building would feature 77 loft apartments, with retail and restaurant space on the lower level, and a park in the back. It was previously priced as a $16 million space. Madden then called the project "transformative."

"When this is done, people will just naturally have more pride in the neighborhood. We'll have more feet out on the street supporting our businesses. The are multiple aspects to this project," Madden said in 2018.

The original building was built in 1899 as a Cuff and Collar Factory. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014
