LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky once again had a mild winter and a lot of people, including meteorologist Deitra Tate, are not complaining. But there are plenty of people who enjoy the snow.  In this Project Weather School project, Deitra is showing your kids how they can make a blizzard in a bag. Kids get to learn about blizzards while being crafty and creative.

A blizzard occurs when you have strong winds for several hours — or longer — that blows around snow to the point where visibility is low — possibly as low as .25 miles or less.

What you’ll Need:

  • Ziploc Bag
  • Sharpie/Marker
  • One piece of white paper or you can mix in a little blue paper if desired
  • Straw
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1.      Draw your best Snowman on the Ziploc Bag
  2.      Cut up the white paper into little squares (this will be your “snow”)
  3.      Take the straw…place it into the Ziploc Bag.  Seal up the Ziploc until just before the straw…then blow!  This will create your “wind” ….
  4.      Enjoy the snow moving within you bag…. Creating your mini blizzard.
