- This began happening when the U.S.Open was played at Pinehurst in 1999
- Not only are individuals renting properties during the Open but some corporations are as well
- Pinehurst is now an anchor site for the United States Golf Association so the tournament will return to Pinehurst every five years

Cheri Sundaram said she is really proud of her house in Pinehurst.
This week, she’s renting it to some golf fans who are visiting the Village during the U.S. Open golf tournament.
Sundaram lives in Raleigh and has owned two properties in Pinehurst for nine years.
"People want to rent in The Village particularly as part of the experience of being here in Pinehurst…the birthplace of golf in America,” she said.
This is the first time that she’s rented property for a U.S. Open.
“So to be here right in The Village as part of what’s going on…I think is special. And really…what you want to do when you’re coming to Pinehurst.”
This will be the fourth time the U.S. Open has been played in Pinehurst. Lin Hutaff has been a realtor here since 1978.
And says even though the demand is still high for rentals during the tournament, it may not be the financial windfall that doing that has been previously.
“A lot of people who were hoping for a windfall of $20,000 or $30,000, it’s not happening,” she said.
Hutaff says part of the reason for that is that the USGA has restricted the number of tickets to about 35,000 to enhance the fan experience at the Open.
