Police are searching for a person they say fled from officers and ran into a pond in Durham Wednesday morning. They were still searching the pond Wednesday afternoon.

East End Ave is closed between Angier Ave and Dural Road, and Rowena Ave is closed between the I-885 overpass and East End Ave as police search for the suspect. (Spectrum News 1/Fred Hall)

Durham police said officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Rowena Ave near East End Ave when the suspect jumped out and ran into a nearby pond. 

"Multiple officers jumped in the water and attempted to rescue the suspect, but they were unable to reach him and lost sight of the suspect," police said in a news release.

East End Ave is closed between Angier Ave and Dural Road, and Rowena Ave is closed between the I-885 overpass and East End Ave as police search for the suspect. 

"Motorists can use Angier Ave to Pleasant Dr. to S Miami Blvd (US 70) to get around the road closures," police posted. 

Durham Police, the Durham County Sheriff's Office and the Durham Fire Department are working together to find the suspect.
