A deputy shot and killed an armed man in Sanford late Saturday night, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. on Poplar Springs Church Road, a location from which deputies received a 911 hang-up call.
"Upon arrival, deputies encountered an armed male," deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office said. "Based on the individual's actions, one deputy fired his service weapon, striking the male twice."
The man, whose identity was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, which is standard procedure in a shooting involving an officer.
Deputies did not release the name of the officer involved.
