After a hard fought race that put North Carolina at the center of the presidential election, former President Donald Trump won the state's 16 votes in the Electoral College.

Wednesday morning, Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 presidential race, defeating Democrat challenger and sitting Vice President Kamala Harris, according to results from the Associated Press.

The top statewide races went the other way. Democrat Josh Stein defeated Republican Mark Robinson in the race for governor by a wide margin. And in the race for North Carolina Attorney General, Democrat Jeff Jackson defeated Republican Dan Bishop.

As expected, Republicans won in 10 of North Carolina's 14 congressional districts under new maps created by the GOP-led General Assembly. Democrats won three seats outright. 

The one congressional seat the Associated Press had not called as of 2 a.m. is the 1st District, seen by many as the only competitive district in North Carolina.

With all precincts reporting, incumbent Rep. Don Davis, a Democrat, leads Republican Laurie Buckhout 49.46% to 47.9%. Davis has a lead of more than 5,800 votes in the eastern North Carolina district.

At about 12:30 a.m., Buckhout said she was not conceding the race.

"Like all of you, we are reviewing all the results as they come in. Once the votes have been counted, we will look at all options for getting this over and done with. If a recount is required, we will be ready," Buckhout said on X.
