RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation is working to lessen hydroplaning incidents.

What You Need To Know

  •  NCDOT is developing a new method to reduce hydroplaning

  •  It's currently being tested on I-40 in Johnston County

  •  Research is slated to take two years

NCDOT is studying whether a method involving shotblasting will help make roadways more skid-resistant.

It's currently being tested along the I-40 project in Johnston County.

“We want to see how it would perform under this type of traffic load, in general wear and tear that the traveling public brings upon a roadway," said Matt Hilderbran, NCDOT field operations manager for materials and testing.

The research phase, he says, is expected to last for the next two years.

"We've just started with research, and that's why we're in the very early in the stages of being able to determine how effective and efficient it is," Hilderbran said.
