Severe weather moved across North Carolina Monday night, creating impacts that stretched into the morning for some, like a sinkhole in Fayetteville, hail damage and some downed trees.

Monday afternoon a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Central N.C. and parts of the Triad and mountains. The watch warned of possible large hail, strong winds and frequent lightning strikes.

One of the biggest impacts from the storm was along Raeford Road in Fayetteville. The roadway is closed in both directions after heavy rainfall pounded the asphalt, causing a sinkhole. Crews are aiming to have the road fixed by the end of the day Tuesday, according to a tweet from the NCDOT. There were also reports of downed trees and some downed powerlines across the impacted area.

A driver was also killed when they slammed into a Duke Energy truck that was working on a downed powerline in Raleigh. The lineman was not hurt in the crash, officials said.

The state also saw 107 reports of wind and hail, with the largest hail reports being 2 inches in diameter, which is the size of an egg. Dare County saw the strongest wind gust at 66 mph, which was reported near Oregon Inlet, weather authorities said.
