A child riding a scooter and a vehicle were in a crash that resulted in the child’s death Monday in Apex, according to police.

Authorities with the Apex Police Department were called to the crash scene about 1 p.m. to the 1900 block of Woodall Crest Drive, Deputy Chief Mitchell McKinney said in a news release sent out Monday afternoon.

Police didn’t say how old the child was or release details about the person driving the vehicle involved in the incident.

Following the wreck, the juvenile was taken to a Durham County medical facility but died, police said. No one traveling in the vehicle was hurt, and the cause of the wreck is still under investigation.

“Members of the Apex Police Department Traffic Safety Unit are conducting a crash reconstruction as part of our investigation. APD will provide updates as our investigation continues,” McKinney said.

Police also stressed the information released so far is all based on a “preliminary and ongoing investigation,” and that is evolving as authorities continue gathering evidence. No other information was provided.
