GOLDSBORO, N.C. — The Wayne County Reentry Council will hold a resource event today in Goldsboro.
The council, which helps formerly incarcerated people navigate their next steps, celebrates its one year "rebirth" this month. The council existed for several years before fizzling in 2016. Sheriff Larry Pierce worked with the community to revive it last April.
Renita Dawson is the executive director of the council. She says in the last year they have assisted around 80 people, connecting them with housing, food, child care or anything else they may need help with.
She hopes to keep spreading the message that a second chance is possible, no matter a person's background.
"I am glad to be a part of this movement to give people a second chance, which is what they deserve when they serve their time. Let's help them reintegrate into our society," Dawson said.
The resource event is free and open to the public Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 714 Simmons Street in Goldsboro.
