RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police are investigating a shooting that happened between a suspect and officers early Monday morning.

The shooting happened in the 700 block of Cumberland Street, police say.

Around 7 a.m., Wake County Public School System said nearby Ligon Magnet Middle School was placed on lockdown.

Police say the security measure was because of reports of a subject with a gun in the area. Those reports were related to the nearby shooting, police said, and “no shots were fired at the school.”

They lifted the lockdown just before 7:30 a.m. The school system sent a message out to parents about the incident and said all students are safe.

Raleigh police say the investigation is ongoing and there is no public safety danger currently.
