CARY, N.C. — World Down Syndrome Day takes place on March 21. The annual global awareness day and celebration happens on this day every year to signify the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.

What You Need To Know

  • Monday, 3/21, was World Down Syndrome Day
  • Gigi's Playhouse in Cary celebrated their participants with an ice cream social
  • Gigi's provides free services to people with Down syndrome

There were plenty of reasons to celebrate at Gigi's Playhouse in Cary.

The nonprofit is dedicated to providing a space for therapy and education for those with Down syndrome.

“Got our balloons, awareness colors just to recognize the day," said Tara Stoll, a Gigi's site manager. "World Down Syndrome Day is a day that recognizes awareness and acceptance for people with Down syndrome and their families, a way for us to promote awareness."

For Stoll, World Down Syndrome Day is personal.

“She is the reason I do what I do," Stoll said, referring to her 14-year-old daughter, Olivia, who has Down syndrome.

She says today is about letting the world know people like her daughter can still flourish.

“Let the community know people with Down syndrome can and do amazing things everyday," Stoll said.

Grace, 20, is a perfect example.

She has Down syndrome, yet she holds two jobs, including one at the ice cream shop conveniently attached to Gigi's. It's the same place that happened to throw an ice cream social as part of the celebration.

Gigi's offers free services to any family in need.

They provide educational and therapeutic resources for all age groups.
