CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friendship Trays, a Meals on Wheels service, delivers daily meals to seniors and others unable to cook for themselves.
What You Need To Know
- Friendship Trays delivered “snow packs” to seniors and others unable to cook for themselves ahead of the expected winter weather
- People received a bag of nonperishable groceries in addition to their regular meal delivery
- Items include a protein source, a starch and vegetables
Bad weather can interrupt delivery services. That’s why ahead of Friday’s expected winter weather, volunteers and staff worked to get what they call "snow packs" delivered.
The packs include a bag of nonperishable groceries in case delivery drivers can’t get out on Friday due to weather conditions.
Program Director Kelly Vass says if snow and ice covers the roads, volunteers and drivers may not be able to deliver meals to the 300 people they serve around the Charlotte region.
“Who would have thought the weather would have lingered,” Vass said. “It’s a little tricky thinking about what’s going to happen on Friday. Just to play it safe, we don’t want our recipients to go hungry.”
The extra food should last people through the weekend until they can get back to deliveries on Monday.
