CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Classes will be canceled Tuesday at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill after two students died by suicide.
University leaders say they're giving students a chance to rest and check in with anyone who may need help. School Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz made the announcement Sunday night.
"As chancellor, a professor and a parent, my heart breaks for all those whose suffering goes unnoticed," Guskiewicz said in a statement on the school's website.
The move came on World Mental Health Day after calls for action from the school's student government. Guskiewicz says the university also plans to hold a mental health summit later this month. Additionally, the school will also launch a campus-wide campaign to promote and support mental health awareness.
Faculty and staff who need help are also encouraged to reach out to the school's employee assistance program. In its call for action, the student government asked for classes to be canceled both Monday and Tuesday as well as for the cancellation of University Day events Tuesday afternoon. However, students do have classes Monday and University Day is scheduled to go on as planned.
