What You Need To Know

  • Tuesday marks one year since the police killing of George Floyd

  • Tuesday has been deemed a "Day of Enlightenment"

  • An event will be helt at Benson UMC and Temple Beth in Raleigh at 4 p.m.

His family, in conjunction with the City of Raleigh, have deemed Tuesday the Day of Enlightenment, a day to remember Floyd’s life and continue social justice work in his memory.

Many in the Triangle have been working hard to make the community aware of the significance of this day, including Raleigh-based  podcaster Camille Kauer.

Kauer generally features celebrity chats on her podcast “The E-Spot,” but recently, she has focused her platform on raising awareness about social justice and in particular, the one year mark of George Floyd’s death.

“You hear all these stories that all of these celebrities have been affected by these different issues, it’s time to ask them, what can we do to change this? How do we change this narrative? How do we get more involved?” Kauer explained.

Kauer has had Floyd’s uncle on her podcast and even spoke at the Raleigh mayor’s event to announce the Day of Enlightenment, a time to fundraise for an upcoming memorial center in Raleigh and to reflect on his life.

“We didn’t get justice because George isn’t here, but we did get the world to stop and see that we can change and work together to do this,” Kauer said. “I’m hoping 5/25 will start that initiative that everybody’s doing this in every city, every country. We can all make 5/25 a special day where we come together and do our best for our neighbors.”
