CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill sent out an alert at 11:43 a.m. Friday saying that police reported an armed and dangerous man on campus. The university sent out an all-clear tweet around 12:20 p.m.
The UNC campus police earlier tweeted there was an armed individual near the Ambulatory Care Center and told everyone to shelter in place.
According to a news release from George Battle, Vice Chancellor, Institutional Integrity & Risk Management at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC police responded at 11:31 a.m. to a 911 call to Orange County saying an armed individual was at the Ambulatory Care Center. After arriving at 11:34 a.m. and doing a thorough search and review of security camera footage, it was determined that no armed individual was on campus. The all-clear was then sent.
An unspent bullet was found on the scene, but it belonged to an officer on the scene.
“The University has been actively investigating this incident in coordination with UNC Hospital Police and other law enforcement agencies. We have carefully analyzed video surveillance and interviewed witnesses on scene in an effort to thoroughly determine whether or not any individuals were present with a firearm," Battle said in the release. “I am grateful for the quick response of UNC Police, UNC Hospital Police and our town and county law enforcement partners. They were on the scene within minutes of the dispatch and responded with thoroughness and great professionalism.”
