CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina says a cluster of COVID-19 cases have been identified in the Sigma Nu fraternity.
The university sent an Alert Carolina Emergency notification out Saturday about the group located at 109 Fraternity Court in Chapel Hill.
On Friday, UNC also sent out an alert about clusters being identified at two housing units located in Ehringhaus Community and Granville Towers.
The university says the individuals identified in these clusters are isolating and receiving medical monitoring. The Orange County Health Department has also been notified, UNC says, and is working with the school to identify additional potential exposures.
The news of these cases comes shortly after another video surfaced, appearing to show some UNC students not taking the COVID-19 threat seriously.
Spectrum News 1 viewer Alisha Clarkson sent footage of students gathered in clusters and not wearing a mask while off campus over the past week.
"They're still not listening," she says.
Clarkson turned over the videos to school, local, and county authorities pushing for stronger enforcement.
"And I would hate to say start issuing citations, but if that's what it takes to get them to take it seriously then that's what it takes," she adds.
Violating a state or local emergency order is a Class 2 misdemeanor which could include a $1,000 fine and up to 60 days in jail for repeat offenders. Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood has said issuing citations is a last resort.
Clarkson hopes her videos will let students know people are watching and are concerned.
