LUMBERTON, N.C. — The Robeson County sheriff is turning things around, and now the county's crime is no longer the worst in the state.
The State Bureau of Investigation released its annual report for stats from 2018. Data showed the county is the fifth highest statewide for overall crime and sixth for property crimes. Between 2017 and 2018 the county saw a nearly 30 percent drop in crime.
The sheriff credits the change to a stronger law enforcement presence in the community. Now there's a Community Impact Team in place to combat drug activity and crime.
"My goal is to make Robeson County the safest place in America to live," First Sergeant with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office Stanley Jackson said. "I want it to be number one for the right reason. I'm feeling good about that and we still have a long ways to go and we're not going to stop until we get that."
Stats from 2018 show Richmond County lead the state in overall crime, followed by Durham and Scotland counties.
