RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sir Walter Wally, Raleigh’s hometown groundhog, is predicting an extended winter.

Yes, six more weeks of winter is on the way after Wally saw his shadow during Sunday’s Groundhog Day event outside of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Wally’s forecast goes against Punxsutawney Phil’s, prediction which called for an early Spring..

According to the modern-day legend: If a groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If it does not see its shadow, there will be an early Spring.

According to the director of the museum, Wally is correct 64 percent of the time. That would nearly double Punxsutawney Phil's accuracy of 36 percent.
