LEE COUNTY, N.C. - A Sanford man is putting smiles on hundreds of kids' faces this holiday season.

  • Army veteran builds handcrafted toys for children at Christmas
  • Has been building them for nearly 60 years
  • Also makes a special gift for veterans and their loved ones

Jim Annis has been making wooden toys in a shed behind his home since the 1960s.

The army veteran makes pieces like cars, trucks, animals, and even dolls as a year-round hobby. The toys are then delivered to children through the Salvation Army of Lee County.

Nearby contractors on construction sites supply him with the wood, and Annis gets the paint, springs, and wheels.

"I have to sort of feel right in here," Annis says. "That's the joy I know I'm giving some of the kids, I'm giving them something that I didn't have a whole lot at Christmas time."

Annis also makes a special gift for veterans and their loved ones.
