CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles faces opposition from four Democratic candidates in Tuesday's primary, that also includes the controversial District 9 vote.

Lyles has been mayor since 2017 and is the Queen City's first African-American woman mayor.

Running against her Tuesday are Roderick Davis, Tigress Sydney Acute McDaniel, Joel Odom and Lucille Puckett. Republican David Michael Rice is running unopposed in the primary.

Voters will also choose who advances to November in City Council races. Districts 1-7 are on the ballot, along with the council's at-large seat.

There are primary elections in other Mecklenburg County cities as well including Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville and Matthews.

Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m.
