DURHAM, N.C. -- New details reveal more about what led to the gas explosion that left two people dead and 25 others injured in downtown Durham earlier this year.

  • These updates come after a three-month investigation
  • The investigation found that a gas line was ruptured due to underground drilling
  • They do not know what ignited the gas

The City of Durham Fire Department released findings ruling the explosion on North Duke Street in April was accidental. This decision comes after a three-month investigation into the incident.

The investigation found that a gas line was ruptured due to underground drilling. They do not know what ignited the gas.

It also found that there was no evidence of criminal intent by any company or individual that would warrant prosecution.

Kong Lee, the owner of a coffee shop at the site of the explosion, died in the blast. Jay Rambeaut died 15 days later due to injuries he sustained as he responded to the gas leak.
