CUNNINGHAM, N.C. -- Officials say a man has died after falling off a boat and into the water while fishing at Hyco Lake.

  • Two men were fishing out on the lake when 72-year-old Edward Thompson fell off the boat shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday.
  • His friend, 46-year-old Chris Tuttle, jumped in after him.
  • Thompson was taken to Person Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Two men were fishing out on the lake when 72-year-old Edward Thompson fell off the boat shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday. His friend, 46-year-old Chris Tuttle, jumped in after him, and the boat floated away.

When first responders arrived at the scene, Tuttle was performing CPR on Thompson. EMS were unable to regain a pulse.

Thompson was then taken to Person Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Tuttle was also taken to the hospital with reported chest pain.

Officials say no foul play is suspected.
