HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. -- Harnett County leaders are moving forward with demolishing Boone Trail High School.

  • The 91-year-old building was burned down in early May and brought sadness to the community who say it's a staple.
  • They're planning to build an amphitheater. Ideas also include a park or trail and to have the Boone Trail High School sign be at the front.
  • No date has been given on when the building will be demolished.

The 91-year-old building was burned down in early May and brought sadness to the community who say it's a staple.

Residents are hoping at least the entranceway of the school can be salvaged.

County officials say not much can be saved due to asbestos. They're planning to build an amphitheater.

Ideas also include a park or trail and to have the Boone Trail High School sign be at the front.

"I think the community so far has, you know, been pretty pleased with the county's efforts to preserve this property. I think, you know, we'll do whatever we're capable of doing to appropriately memorialize the site," said Assistant Harnett County Manager Brian Haney.

No date has been given on when the building will be demolished.

On Tuesday, commissioners are holding a public work session at 9 a.m. in the county administration building.
